Summer Counselor, Cambridge Math Circle
Temporary Position: June 29th – July 31st
Location: MIT and Harvard – Cambridge, MA
The Cambridge Math Circle (CMC) is seeking Summer Counselors to support our 2026 Summer Program. This position supports CMC’s student-centered, alternative math enrichment summer program by promoting resourcefulness, strengthening students’ logic skills, and providing opportunities for creative problem solving inside the classroom and out.
The Summer Counselor is responsible for assisting with the planning, development, and implementation of program activities. The program will be held on-campus at Harvard University and MIT, depending on the week. The Counselor is expected to attend camp at both locations for either the full summer (June 29th – July 31st), unless a separate arrangment is made in advance. Working hours are 8:00am to 2:30pm, Monday through Friday (with the exception of July 3rd). A few teachers will also work 2:00pm to 5:30pm.
Compensation: $25 hourly, commensurate with experience.
Job Summary: The Summer Counselor is directly responsible for implementing the CMC curriculum. They will create and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and caregivers. The Counselor will ensure that students achieve appropriate understanding of the material by offering a student-first approach that includes identifying students who are struggling or require additional, more challenging work. They will work closely with the Executive Director and other CMC counselors.
Our summer program integrates traditional outdoor activities alongside our other programming, including outdoor play time, field trips, crafts, and game time. The Counselor is expected to support these activities alongside fulfilling their teaching responsibilities.
The Summer Counselor should be passionate and knowledgeable about mathematics and other STEM-related subjects. They should be excited and energized by math and problem-solving, and eager to encourage campers to develop the same love for math. They should be well-equipped to create a positive learning environment that serves all students, particularly those from marginalized communities who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM.
Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics or a similar STEM field, or demonstrated competence in math as part of or in addition to your degree; students currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in mathematics or another STEM field may also apply

Knowledge of and passion for general mathematics, emphasizing logic and creative problem-solving

Experience teaching and/or mentoring students 7-14 years old

Experience working with and forming positive relationships with individuals from diverse populations and backgrounds

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to maintain positive, consistent communications with students, parents, and CMC staff

Highly organized with strong multitasking skills

Strong skills in stress management and self-regulation

Can stand and walk for extended time periods and climb several flights of stairs multiple times a day

Wholeheartedly supports CMC’s mission to provide math enrichment to all children–especially those traditionally underrepresented in STEM–by emphasizing critical thinking and logic skills

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in mathematics or another STEM-related field post-graduation
-
Proven ability to work with students with learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional difficulties, and/or other behavioral differences

Previous experience providing STEM outreach to marginalized populations

Familiarity working in an urban school setting or at a similar enrichment program
Key Responsibilities:

Provide excellent math instruction for grade levels 1-8

Supervise children during activities, including, but not limited to: music, coding, games, crafts, outdoor activities, field trips, and lunch

Prioritize students’ safety at all times

Facilitate a positive, inclusive, and productive learning environment at all times by encouraging students to participate, ask questions, and offer answers

Provide an enjoyable experience for each camper

Be a good role model by setting examples in promptness, manners, respect, language, appearance, health, and kindness

Travel to the Harvard University and MIT campuses as required for camp and arrive on time

Arrive familiar with the material and prepared to support the week’s activities and themesAttend all required CMC counselor trainings
Work Environment:
This role requires the ability to spend a significant amount of time indoors and outdoors, walk and stand for long periods, climb several flights of stairs repeatedly throughout the day, and to teach and supervise in areas with lots of loud talking. The Counselor must be able to perform their essential functions in this environment, as they will encounter it daily.
